American Revolution Biography Project
This is a project I use in my LA class conjunction with the teaching of the American Revolution in history class. The students research a famous person from the time period and create a visual aide that displays the information that they found. I use this activity to help teach the students how to cite sources using MLA and how to conduct research using reputable sources. The document includes everything you will need to complete this same project in your own class. I have included an assignment

Synonym, antonym, prefix, suffix worksheet game
The cross out game asks students to use their vocabulary skills to cross out words from a list, leaving them with a saying. The first group or person to discover the saying is the winner. Students are asked to cross out words with specific affixes, and to find synonyms and antonyms. They are also asked to cross out nouns, adjectives, etc.
I like to have to these worksheets handy for students that complete their work quickly. They require no pieces or parts! All you need is a pencil.

Prefix and Suffix Jeopardy Review Game
This is a powerpoint Jeopardy game that has been created to review common prefixes and suffixes. The game is all set and ready for your class to learn and enjoy!

Conducting Research Webquest and quiz
This is a short webquest that I created for my 8th grade students to complete before we begin our research papers. I have found that many of students don't know how to gather reliable information from the Internet. This activity would only take one class period and has the students using safe websites with no advertisements. I posted the item as a word document so that buyers can change and adjust things in the webquest before giving it to students. It also includes a short quiz.

Creating Gutsy Goals in the Classroom
Using Eric Jensen's idea of using goal setting to increase student performance, this product contains a presentation and student worksheets that will guide your students through the goal setting process. Students will evaluate their past attitudes and performance in a specific subject area, and will use this information to create a gutsy goal for the year. They will then create weekly micro goals that will help them achieve their gutsy goals!

This download includes a graphic organizer and an outline for students to use to help them write about their real summer vacation or a made up one. Students are given story openers and closing lines to choose from which help them complete the writing assignment quickly.Fun summer paper is also included for students to write their final draft on. Literature Circle Journals
This is a lit circle journal that teachers can use to encourage student involvement in lit circle discussion and monitor student readings. These journals ask the students to complete journal entries before discussions and after. Students are asked to infer, predict, summarize, record vocabulary, describe characters, find the theme, and describe the setting.
The document was left in Word so that it could be altered to fit your text.

Finding the Theme PowerPoint activity
I have been having the hardest time figuring out how to teach my students about theme as we prepare for the State tests. I created this powerpoint to give them a clear defintion and provide them with a chance to practice using common books and movies. It really helped to clear things up for them.

This is a short powerpoint that describes 5 common types of propaganda. The PowerPoint includes bandwagon, testimonial, glittering generalities, plain folks, and repetition. Each slide contains a description of the technique and a picture example.

Rhetorical devices/ figurative language/ Speech analysis unit plan
This is a short unit plan for teaching rhetroical techniques or figurative language to older students. The unit contains a PowerPoint that describes the techniques, a note sheet for students to record notes, a handout, and a link to a website that gives transcripts to several great speeches.
Techniques include: alliteration, allusion, analogy, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, anaphora, antistrophe

Science Fair Report- PowerPoint and grading rubric
This zipped file includes a Powerpoint presentation for students explaining what to inlude in your science fair report. It breaks down each section and explains what is required.
I have also included the rubric that we use to grade these reports.
It's usually very helpful for students, and we have found that we receive a much higher quality paper from students.

Book Talk Student Handout
This is a handout that students can complete prior to giving a book talk in front of the class. It allow students to plan what they are going to say and which passage they will read to the class. Students will provide a summary, a star rating, and a critique of the book. It also serves as a check for teachers who want to verify that students have read the book and gives them something tangible that they can provide a grade for.

Awards & shining teacher moments
I was selected Teacher of the Year for my building the first year I taught. It really was unexpected and an honor! This past year, my 8th graders selected me as Teacher of the Quarter for our middle school! Awards are never my intention, but it really is nice to be recognized for your hard work, especially by your students!
I am very proud to say that my husband has done very well on the Ohio Achievement Assessments. He was able to achieve a 100% passage rate on both the reading and math assessments for three years in row!
My own education history
My husband and I both attended Bowling Green State University for undergrad, but we didn't meet until we began our Masters degree program in Reading!
