Encourage your students to research their passions and they will develop a love for research itself! After my third successful year guiding my 7th graders in independent research projects, I've developed a detailed process to provide them with structure and freedom to explore at the same time.

September- TechGram
Have students explore the latest technologies with a new theme each month! During September students are investigating the problem solving process, so they are searching for an article about a novel technology that solves an authentic problem. Once found, students create an Instagram style artifact for the new technology!

Focus Questions: Embryology
At the beginning of my unit, I have students read and discuss the focus questions they'll be examining during the lessons. They each have a copy in their notebook where they record initial ideas, thoughts, and inquiries about each focus question. At the end of the unit we revisit the page and discuss how their knowledge has changed. This product is the set of focus questions for the embryology unit.

My 7th grade scientists keep an interactive notebook each year. I've created this first entry to give a fun and detailed purpose for their notebook. I reference the page several times throughout the year to remind students of the type of recordings they should be making.

Teaching style
As Ms. Frizzle says: Take Chances, Make Mistakes, Get Messy!
She really is my hero and I strive to give my kids as many authentic, hands-on science experiences as possible. I want them to fall in love with the scientific process and constantly ask "but why? how? what happens next? what if?". The more they talk to each other, engage in debate, and offer new information they've found on their own, the better class it is!!
