Constellation Mini Project
This project is about 2-3 days, a quick one for 4-6 graders. They have to choose a constellation, research it by answering the questions, then make a star diagram using star stickers and black construction paper. On one side, they make the constellation as you see it in the sky, on the other, they make the diagram.

Patent Application for younger students
This is a great doc for kids who are asked to create something (tangible) ie a leprechaun trap, monster trap, toy, new candy bar, etc. It combines math, writing, and inventive thinking. Students fill out all the aspects of the patent and then you fill out the grey parts if the patent is approved.

Peer Speech Evaluation
This form is for the OTHER students to fill out while the speaker is presenting his speech. I can't tell you how amazing this worked out, even beyond my wildest imagination. You make 2 copies per page. Have the kids cut them, and then as the presenter is speaking, kids "grade" them by circling one of the 3 calvins for each category. This form is for more simple science experiments, however, goes more in depth with the details of the scientific method. This form looks easy, but does take a while to fill out. It can be used with any simple group experiment.

Science Experiment Summary
This is a form that's for when you do those quick, fun, easy science experiments in class. Every Thursday an aide comes in to do a science experiment with the kids, like a quick snapshot activity of a guideline they need to understand. I have them fill this out, simply to help them remember what they did, why it was important, etc. Also, go rent Dispicable Me. It's a great movie and the kids love the minions...

Reading Response Journal Rubric
This is for the teacher who hates to read through every single line of a kid's reading response journal. This rubric is designed to allow you to flip through the pages to check for completion and artistry, pick certain responses that you really want to critique and then assign a grade. The middle box (c) is left open for your additional comments in that criteria that the rubric does not address. Hands On Spelling Activity Homework Contract -5th
This is a spelling contract primarily for 5th graders but can be modified for 4th-6th. There is a separate contract for 3rd grade. Students can choose from a variety of activities to practice their spelling words. They can pick from 5 point, 10 point, and 15 point activities, but must get a total of 25 points. Many of the activities are hands on ways to practice spelling.

HOOK movie (with Robin Williams) tied to story elements
Who doesn't love the movie HOOK!? I always use this movie after I have taught literary elements to my 5th graders. This is a legal size paper with questions about the movie that all relate to the elements. Elements included are setting, antagonists, protagonists, character development, theme, conflict, problem/solution.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Extra Credit Opportunity
Basically, why not assign some extra credit and critical thinking while the kids go home and watch the show anyway? It's a basic story elements worksheet that's hooked to A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Students watch the show, then fill out the characters (+ traits), the setting, the themes, the summary, etc.

Group Collaboration Rubric
This is a rubric in which a group works together to create a product (and sometimes a presentation as well). It's easy: circle the achievement, with your comments at the bottom, but students also receive a group grade and an individual grade. Works really well to diminish the squabbling and group catfights, and works for all grade levels. See also my group peer evaluation form.

Solar Oven Experiment Write Up
This is a handout used for those grades who make solar ovens to cook cookie dough, smores, quesadillas, etc. There are boxes for 3 experiments, questions about the building of the oven (type in "solar oven" into google if you need instructions), and then at the end there are wrap up questions about what they learned.

Book vs Movie Comparison with pre-watching questions related to book
I absolutely LOVE this form. We read novels that have movies that connect to them. I have used this form for every novel that we have read where we have completed the unit by watching the movie. The organizer opens by asking students to a) tell the part they are most looking forward to seeing in the movie b)asking them for their top 5 scenes from the book, and c) asking them for their favorite quote from the book and telling them to listen for it in the film. Home Alone story elements
Every Christmas my 5th grade class is just discovering the movie, "Home Alone". Since it is such a classic, I created this "graphic organizer" in which students look at the main characters of the movie, their character traits, their fears, and the relationship between the characters. It also has students summarize the plot as well as identify 3 main problems and solutions within the movie. It helps reinforce that stories have different structures, that can be found through text and in film.

By The Great Horn Spoon Reading Response Questions
This is for students to complete as you read through By the Great Horn Spoon. It is slightlier easier and less time consuming then some of my other journals. It contains reading comprehension questions for the start of the chapter, and then look and learn questions that involve grammar skills. It also has some science and more creative writing in it as well.

Thanksgiving Macy's Parade Extra Credit
This is a really fun way for students to earn extra credit by doing what they do anyway: Watch for Santa during the Thanksgiving Day parade. They have a variety of questions, from almost all subject areas that they complete while the parade is going on. Almost all my students usually do this opportunity for extra credit because they love it!

Bandit's Moon Unit Test
Since there are no Bandit's Moon unit tests out there, I created this quick test after I assigned this novel to a small group of readers. It is a little more than 30 questions, with 2 short answers and the rest are multiple choice/true false. It's not a terribly hard test, but would be a good test to give to make sure students actually read what they were assigned. The answer key is at the bottom of the test.

GUMS for Writing
This is a handout for students if you use the "Check your GUMS" verbage when teaching writing. It explains the difference between checking for Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, and Spelling. It also helps parents learn to ask the write questions, and address errors the proper way.

Thanksgiving Calorie Counter
This is a SUPER FUN Thanksgiving activity to complete on Thanksgiving day. I usually assign it as extra credit for students to help their math grade. Students have to track how many calories they eat on Thanksgiving day (from start to finish). I also allow students to follow other family members as well. They have a calorie count list to help them, and then they must fill out the sheet and list what was eaten (+ what time and how many calories). They then total up the calories for the day.

Diary pages with picture and writing
I've used this in my 3rd and 5th grade classes for LOTS of stuff. It's very helpful when you have to observe something (ie the growth of a plant) over a few days. We've also used this diary when we started a squirrel and bird feeder outside our classroom. We drew pictures of the new furry friends that came to join us, observed their actions, named them and described their characteristics, etc.

I love to create. I've taught for a long time, and I am still revamping things to make them more fun, and more interesting to the kids. I am very excited to be apart of this website, as we all know that teachers are HIGHLY underpaid for their time in the industry...
