Students have problems estimating heights. This project is complete with a suggested single website which they will use to locate information about the skyscrapers of Cleveland. This can be used as a sample to complete together before researching your city's skyscrapers or as a self-directed activity. Students not only report the height in meters and feet, but they become familiar with how many meters/feet make up a floor. The students will also be required to list additional information on
My students enjoy this activity and it really gets them thinking about fractions and geometry. For example, they will be asked to draw 20 bulbs and color 1/5 of them red. The project also touches on area and perimeter as well as some geometry vocabulary and usage. We use our Everyday Math Geometry Templates (can see image of one online), but the project can be adjusted for them to freehand draw the shapes. Challenging and engaging activity.
Perfect for introduction or reinforcement of 5.MD.4 and 5.MD.5. Complete step, by step instructions with two different student sheets. Students use cubes to crate various volumes. They recognize that once they find the area of the base you can either add or multiply up to discover the volume. Can be used for direct instruction and then break into cooperative learning groups. Simple, user friendly plan all ready to go!
Here's a simple chart that my students add to their resource binder or interactive notebooks for determining divisibility. This really comes in handy when reducing fractions as well as checking division.
Simple one page sheet to get your students up and measuring with a partner. Students will be required to measure in both metric and customary units to find linear, area and volume measurements in their classroom. Cooperative, hands-on and simple to get them thinking about measurement.
