This graphic organizer is to be used with NJ (or any state) CCCS 2.RL.3: Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges or NJCCCS 3.RL.3: Describe characters in a story (eg. their traits, motivations or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. It can be translated to use with any book or fiction writing.

NJ CCCS RL 2.2, SL2.2 Using fairytales or folktales, match cause to effect, and vice versa. This graphic organizer uses Cinderella, already a well-known text, to match causes and effects and effects to causes. Some of the information is already there, the students must complete either the cause or the effect in writing. Any classic version of the Cinderella story could be used to read to your class and complete this activity.

This is a compilation of chapter 1-6 questions from the novel Rip Roaring Russell by Johanna Hurwitz. The questions are both right-there and inference type, requiring the students to use both their ability to go back and find information in the text and to use their schema to infer. Also, I included some vocabulary activities to go along with each chapter. They are mostly grouped by chapter, one page for Chp.1-2, one page for Chp. 3-4, etc. These are basic dictionary/definition activities.

Any two stories can be used to complete this comparison.

Included in this packet are 8 total pages: 4 one-page nonfiction articles (birds, the Titanic, Jupiter and Barack Obama), and 4 pages to practice various nonfiction strategies (fact/opinion, main idea and details, etc). These are second to third grade level reading passages.

This graphic organizer will assist students to write a short constructed response to explain why an author chose to write the book. It is based on the acronym PIE- Persuade, Inform or Entertain. It is a stepping stone to writing a full individual response to explain author's purpose.

Included in this packet is a poster defining cause and effect, a partially-completed graphic organizer to use with students for general practice, and a cause and effect game to play with a whole class. CCCS 2.RI.3 Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, which includes cause and effect.

This is a series of discussion group questions put together two chapters at a time. It is intended to encourage the students to think about the story and discuss what they have read with a partner or group. They can then be prepared with some guidance from the teacher before a small-group discussion.

This is a graphic organizer used to help students write a nonfiction paragraph on a selected weather topic. The purpose is for the student to combine their ideas about how certain types of weather affect their lives with factual information about that particular type of weather. It also combines the skill of writing a main idea, supporting details and a closing sentence.

This short game includes understanding coin money and comparing numbers. It requires each student (or pairs) to use dice to roll two two-digit numbers then record each number and use the <, > or = to compare them.
