I don't know about you, but I have been frustrated using the Lucy Calkins rubric to score my student's writing. It has great stuff in it, but I felt it wasn't student or even parent friendly and it didn't fit on one page. Thinking about teacher clarity at our professional development sparked me to create this rubric for opinion writing. Not sure if it is better, but at least it fits on one page (double sided) and I would be comfortable sharing it with parents. Take it or leave it! :)

This document includes three poster/handouts for classroom management. The first is about what the colored dice on our desks mean. This is a strategy to keep kids working and allow the teacher to move around the room uninterrupted. Get wooden dice for each desk and paint/color them red, blue, and green. Green means they are fine, red means they need help, and blue means they are finished. The next page is an early finisher task reminder. The last is a poster/handout about "I" Statements.
What make a good sentence? Make sure you add who, did what, why! Make that sentence a 3 star sentence, just like the example shown ! Pictures included for visual learners.
