Game Changer - intro to Variables

Created by
Elsen Science
Introduce your students to EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN with a game. Science students struggle with INDEPENDENT and DEPENDENT VARIABLES. Why not use a basic game to help introduce and practice these concepts? And don't forget the very important rule to science: only change one thing at a time!

About the store

Experience

I have taught for 10 years in a public school in the largest district in my state, focusing most of my time on 8th grade integrated science. I have worked summers at local science museums. I am the past president of my state's NSTA chapter. I coach an award-winning Science Olympiad team. I have coached an esports team as well as AVID classes. I have presented at a national NSTA conference, and I have earned countless distinguished teacher awards. Science education is my hobby as well as my career.

Teaching style

My teaching style has a foundation in Modeling Instruction (AMTA) where students approach and explore phenomena, then use dialogue circles to develop and adjust working models (I am a trained Modeling Instructor). Most of my lessons reflect a 5E approach and are NGSS-aligned. Some of my lessons are project based learning influenced heavily by Science Olympiad.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Kansas Association of Teachers of Science, distinguished teacher (2016). Kansas Association of Teachers of Science, past president (2020). NSTA national conference (St. Louis, 2019) presenter. Good Apple of USD259 awardee (2014 & 2018). Head coach of Science Olympiad: 1st Place Regionals (2020), 2nd Place State (2019).

My own education history

Bachelor of Fine Arts (2006), Wichita State Bachelor of Arts Education, Science 5-8 (2011), Wichita State Masters (in progress), Emporia State
