About the store
Rachel Karns of Karns & Noble LLC has 15 years of experience in the 7-12 ELA classrooms. She has taught all ability types (high, medium, and low) and has learned that every level will grow exponentially with engaging lessons with some added rigor. She has experienced it all (grades 7,8,9,10,11 and 12)--and loves it all! The results in her classroom led her to an offer to become a consulting teacher for other districts who needed ELA coaching and support. I love teaching, and I LOVE seeing kids fully engaged and connecting to material. Engagement and rigor with support can and will change students' lives!

Teaching style

Rachel Karns holds a philosophy of rigor and support in the classrooms. Students love to be challenged when they feel safe to try and potentially fail at first. In her lessons, students are supported, encouraged, and challenged to take on grade level-rigor, with lots of scaffolds in place. Modeling reading, thinking, questioning, and discussing complicated themes are key. Engagement in learning creates curiosity, which creates connection and value for students.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Rachel Karns has been awarded the Kiwanis teacher of the district in her community--Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She has taught all levels of students from 7-12 (honors, regular, and struggling students with special needs.) Rachel's belief in rigor with support have led her students (no matter their level) to outperform their cohorts on required state testing. Students typically respond that they have never enjoyed English class until taking Mrs. Karns' English class.

My own education history

I attended Whitworth College (now Whitworth University) for my bachelor's degree in English Education. I taught three years of middle school English and a middle school reading class in Las Vegas, Nevada. I decided to pursue my master's in film and television (MFT, emphasis screenwriting) at Chapman University in Orange, CA. *This degree heightened my desire to become an expert writing teacher, and the skills I learning in film school have benefited my analysis skills when teaching novels, short stories, and creative writing. I have taught the final 12 years of my teaching career at Coeur d'Alene High School in Idaho (grades 9-12: I have taught it all, and all levels). *Now I am a consulting ELA teacher, a consulting PLC educator, an SAT prep class teacher (for students), and SAT prep class teacher (for teachers, Professional Development), and much more for my community and now schools all across the USA.
