Teaching style

This teaching approach is student-centred, relationship-based, and ensemble-driven. Strong music programs are built on clear structures, high expectations, and genuine care for students as people. Rehearsals prioritize: - Clarity and consistency, so students understand expectations and purpose - Positive behaviour support rather than punitive approaches - Explicit instruction in routines, rehearsal skills, and leadership - Musical excellence alongside social-emotional growth Classroom management is treated as something that is taught, practiced, and reinforced, not assumed. Many resources focus on helping students: - Work productively within an ensemble - Regulate themselves in high-energy rehearsal spaces - Reflect on choices and repair harm when mistakes occur - Take ownership of their role within the group This work is informed by special education principles, ensuring materials are: - Accessible and flexible - Appropriate for mixed-ability ensembles - Adaptable for varied program sizes, schedules, and teaching contexts At its core, this philosophy views ensembles as communities. When students feel safe, respected, and valued, they take musical risks, support one another, and grow — both as musicians and as humans. Every Engaging Ensembles resource is designed to support that environment.
