Argument and Counterargument Matching Game

I used this game when teaching argument and counterargument with my 5th graders. I cut the strips of paper up (could glue them onto construction paper to make them more sturdy) and distributed them to the class. They had to walk around the room and find their match. When the game ended, students lined up with their match and I called on a few students to share out whether their card was the argument/counterargument. Students had to justify their answers. You can reshuffle cards and play again

George's Secret Key to the Universe Fishbowl Discussion Activity

The first standard I covered in George's Secret Key to the Universe was comparing and contrasting characters. Students recorded notes in Venn Diagrams comparing George and his parents. At the end of the week, our culminating activity was to do a student-directed fishbowl discussion comparing and contrasting George and his parents, and touching on some other discussion points. This was the first time my students did a fishbowl discussion, so the explicit directions on the slides helped direct the

George's Secret Key to the Universe Figurative Language Analysis

I made this resource to help my students analyze the effectiveness of figurative language. The resource has students compare the figurative language directly with literal language, pinpoint words and effectively caught their attention and painted images in their minds, and how the language helped them to make inferences. This was a good scaffold tool to help gear the students up for being able to analyze figurative language and its effects.

"Wear Sunscreen"--Words of Wisdom Graduation/ End-of-Year Activity

Activity requires students to read the lyrics to the hypothetical commencement speech "Wear Sunscreen," by columnist Mary Schmich. Students can then craft their own poem of life advice using a template modeled after the original lyrics. This activity is perfect for graduating students or as an end-of-year reflection. Visual Word Wall for Early Readers and English Language Learners

Document features words and pictures for every letter of the alphabet to display on a classroom word wall or to be used as flashcards. Some letters contain more words and pictures than others, but each contains at least 2, with most pictures in color. I've used this word wall in my classroom with great success! I teach grades 6-12 ESL; the word wall is appropriate for those grade levels, but could also be used with younger students, who are first learning to read.

George's Secret Key to the Universe Figurative Language Quiz

Here is a short quiz I created for analyzing figurative language. Students are asked to compare the effectiveness of the figurative language vs. the literal language, draw the images that are painted in their minds, etc. My students, who usually struggle with figurative language, did very well on this quiz! I loved seeing their drawings of the images that were painted in their minds. This was a fun way for them to interact with the language, instead of just writing about it.

It contains foundational prounciation rules with examples and pictures. There are also many practice activities (both teacher-led, and independent).
