I love to use this graphic organizer as a reading guide while listening to Trevor Noah's Born a Crime. Students can either draw or write a summary in the polaroid, pose a discussion or reading quiz question, track unknown words or allusions to look up, record significant quotes, and track the topics we are examining as themes in the memoir: crime, education, family and parenting, identity, poverty, racism, and violence. I have 9 years of experience cultivating a classroom where students feel the necessity of their presence, pride in their progress, passion for literature, and confidence in their communication. Ultimately, I want my students to be proud of the work that they do, the learning they cultivate, and the people they become.
