Introduction to Angles & Geometry Vocabulary

To introduce chapter 9 Math In Focus for fourth grade I created this PowerPoint to review vocabulary (points, lines, line segments, angles, vertices, protractors) and how to measure angles including a review of the protractor. Also introduces types of angles (straight, right, obtuse, acute, reflex). I usually print this packet for students to keep as a reference in math folders and to complete the guided practice parts.

Long Division Mnemonic & Practice Problems

So many students struggle with the steps of long division. This is a great mnemonic (memory) device to help them remember the steps. I made it into a small poster I hang in my classroom as well as little cards I give students to keep at their desks which they reference while working. I have found it helpful to have it on the first few homework sheets I send home as practice. I put the practice problems on "graph paper" so the students line up their numbers. I encourage students to check their di

My Geometry Vocabulary Book

Packet kids complete to develop understanding of geometry vocabulary (point, line segment, line, angle, vertex, acute angle, obtuse angle, right angle, reflex angle, straight angle, square, rectangle, parallel lines, perpendicular lines). Students are asked to write the definition and draw an example for each.

Data Landmark Flashcards/Memory Game

To help students learn data landmark vocabulary (mean, median, mode, range, maximum & minimum) print out these flashcards. They can be two sided for students working on practicing alone or can be printed single sided and used in a memory game! For the memory game I'd print a few versions and students match the definitions to the correct data landmark then keep any pairs they turn over.

Experience

I am currently a fourth grade special educator and reading interventionist. I have previously taught middle school math and science.

Teaching style

Working with students with special needs means working with learners with widely varying abilities. I design creative, stimulating lesson plans that accommodate multiple intelligences, bring a hands-on approach to learning, and keep students interested and focused. I encourage student learning by using a number of hands on activities, including the use of manipulatives, and by incorporating technology into my lessons.

My own education history

I graduated from Rutgers College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, and earned my Master’s Degree in Education at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University with certifications in elementary education (K-5) and middle school mathematics (6-8). I returned to school at Kean University to get my Teacher of Students with Disabilities certification which I completed in 2013.
