About the store
My name is Jenny-Lyn, and I am an educator who has an interest in adult, elementary (Grade 1 to 6) and ESL education. I was born in Ontario, Canada and finished a Humanities B.A. at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. I was fortunate to gain three years of teaching experience with adult learners in Japan but was ready to return to the classroom after completing a Diploma of Education in Melbourne, Australia. I taught ESL students between 5 and 12 years of age in Nunavut Canada, before moving to Ottawa in 2015. Four years as a Long-Term Occasional Teacher with Ottawa Carleton District School Board led me through grade 3 ETFI, Junior Autism and many other unique roles. However, in 2019 I became a permanent teacher and am excited to be teaching full-time kindergarten in 2020. My passion continues to be in the field of English as a Second language and so I always create materials with the needs of these students in mind.

Family Communication: Celebrations (Arabic, Pashto, Swahili & Mandarin)

These resources were created to support my teaching practices in a kindergarten class in Ottawa, but I continue to use them with families in older grades. At that time, our team’s improvement plan focused on moving from token activities to richer, student-centred experiences. However, I found myself struggling, as celebration after celebration seemed to arise with little time to prepare. Using the parent survey to narrow down the celebrations that were meaningful to our students allowed me to co

Behaviour Self-Assessment_Guest Teacher

This self-assessment resource was initially created to improve the behaviour of a grade 4/5 class toward their new music teacher. However, I started using it to have the students reflect on their interactions with guest teachers (supply teachers) and presenters as well. These post-experience reflections made a difference in encouraging the students to take responsibility for their actions and gave students who made positive choices the chance to be acknowledged and celebrated. It is important t

Assessment: Google Forms: Grade 2 (all subjects)

There are many methods for recording assessments and observations. I found that using Google Forms provided more flexibility, organization and time management than handwritten or excel-based records. Each Google form contains a space to identify the assignment’s name, description (optional) and date. Followed by a checkbox list of the curriculum expectations that allows for multiple selections as some activities may cover more than one expectation in the subject. Identifying the expectation

Mental Math: Near Doubles/Halves (Up to 20)

Based on Alex Lawson's Student Continuum of Numeracy Development, the following resource can be used to introduce and practice the strategies. I had noticed that more subtle introductions to strategies had been less successful and thus the original resource was created. After using it for a year with a grade 3/4 class, I have made changes and created additional versions to match other grades. Please note that this set includes only the section on Near Doubles and only include numbers up to 20.

Looking for the Ontario ESL STEPS curriculum, it can be found here. As an ELD educator, one of the biggest challenges was communicating with homeroom teachers about the progress of the students I worked with individually and in small groups. Hallway chats in passing or those rushed minutes before school started were not always helpful, especially when multiple educators supported the same student. I attempted electronic methods, but these often resulted in extra steps or information not being

Writing Continuum: Prompts (Set #1: Items)

Often writing prompts are 2-3 sentences describing a scenario the student must reflect on and write about in their notebook. However, these are limiting for beginning English Language Learners, students with special education needs (e.g. expressive language deficit) and younger students with limited reading abilities. This led me to organize and start using two sets of picture-based prompts that provided much-needed scaffolding as the students work towards more traditional text-based prompts. T

Teaching style

Being a kinaesthetic learner myself, I engage students through hands-on and creative lessons. Some of the methods that inspire and provide a foundation include Picture Word Induction Model, Transforming Learning and Picturing Writing. I also adopt smaller community programs (e.g. Participaction150) to create classroom experiences that are meaningful to the students' lives.

My own education history

Along with a Diploma of Education through La Trobe University in Melbourne, I have completed additional qualification courses in the following subjects... Teaching First Nation, Metis and Inuit Children (2015), Mathematics Primary and Junior Part 1 (2015), English as a Second Language Part 1 (2012), Part 2 (2013) and Specialist (2014), Special Education Part 1 (2012) and Part 2 (2014), Reading Part 1 (2012), Part 2 (2014) and Specialist (2015), Kindergarten Part 1 (2013) Part 2 (2020)

Additional biographical information

It is not possible to write about myself and not include a reference to my orange fur baby Potato. He joined our family in 2018 from a cat shelter in Smith Falls and has been our purring alarm clock ever since. Though he has yet to visit my classroom, students feel as if he is one of our clutter as he often becomes part of the stories I tell in class.
