In Grade 6 Social Studies, Albertans learn about how democracy works in our local and provincial government. To accompany the textbook that many teachers and students use, "Voices in Democracy," I have created these booklets that tie in with several of the key chapters. These booklets make for a great study resource, and allow students to work within the textbook, identifying key parts of the chapters as they learn about democracy!

This is a short booklet describing the parts of a newspaper, and how they are laid out. Attached to it is a worksheet that will allow students to plan their own newspaper article!

This worksheet can be used to help teach the students about the different forms of decision making, such as Autocratic, Lottery, Consensus, Representative Democracy, and Majority Rules. It includes a page for the students to find the definition of each word, and a few activities where they can put those types of Decision Making to work!

In this activity, students are asked to help their local government balance a budget. The government is currently over budget, and the students must help decide what changes to make, and give a detailed reason for those changes! There is an added math place value activity attached.

This activity is designed to supplement student learning of factors by having them create factor trees!

In Narrative Writing, one of the most important ways to create a working story is to have a protagonist who people can relate with, or understand. As a reader, it is hard to care about a story and the troubles a character may be facing if your don't care about the character. Using this 10-page Character Sheet, inspired by games like Dungeons & Dragons, Skyrim, etc., have your students create a character foundation that they can use to help them develop a hero and a villain for their story.

This activity helps students understand decimals to the hundredths place value. It is a great second lesson or review lesson, using a placemat graphic organizer to help build connections with decimals and real world ideas!
