In this worksheet, students are given a data table containing two "like" sets of data (height of boys and girls, vs age). Students are asked to graph this data on a single line graph, then interpret the data, to answer a few simple questions. There is also an answer key included.

Collecting Information and Making Inferences from a Non-Standard Data Source

In this worksheet, students are asked to collect information, make comparisons, and draw inferences from a non-standard data set. Rather than a data table or graph, the data is in a visual graphic. The data revolves around the consumption of a variety of products in the US, vs the world average. This would work equally well in a math, science, SS, or LA class, as it involves analyzing data, as well as looking at world issues.

Informal Science Lab Report

This basic lab report can be used generically with many labs. Students are given a problem to solve, or question to answer. They make a prediction, backing it up with observations, then complete the lab, collecting data and observations as they go. They then try to explain the science behind their observations using information from their notes, or prior experiences. Finally, they're asked to explain what the investigation proves, again, backing it up with observations from the lab.

Experience

I've been teaching middle school physical science since 2004. In our class, we cover the basic concepts of physics and chemistry. These concepts are great baseline or refresher information for high school physical science, chemistry, and physics.

Teaching style

I implement a wide variety of styles into my lessons, ranging from direct instruction to hands-on labs. I believe that allowing students to experience the science in different ways allows them to better learn the material. <p> While the rigor in the classroom is high, I include as much humor and life connections as I can, which greatly increases student engagement. </p>

Awards & shining teacher moments

Really, the greatest honor I receive from my profession is getting the students to push themselves through the "I don't get it" stage, to the point where their face lights up, they say (usually shout) "I get it now!", and they're up, helping other kids figure it out.

Additional biographical information

In addition to teaching, and spending time with my family, I enjoy mountain biking, running, and working with computers. <p> From high school graduation, until I got married (ten years), I worked during my summers as an engine operator, and squad boss for the US Forest Service, fighting wildfires throughout the Western U.S. My days of doing that are over now, but I have molded that love for fire into a fun elective class, where I teach my students the basics of wildland firefighting.</p>
