Students work through the stages of collecting, representing, and analyzing data for a question that they choose. I suggest making sure students check in with the teacher before moving onto the next stage. This way, you can assist with misunderstandings in real time, instead of getting a final product that has been done wrong. After my students finish successfully, I have them copy their line plot onto construction paper to make a "beautiful bulletin board version" that goes into the hallway. D
How much sugar does a typical cake recipe contain? This investigative activity is excellent for self-directed learners who are ready for an activity that requires little to no teacher assistance. I originally created this as an enrichment activity for students who demonstrated competency in our data unit.
