It prompts students to think about plot, theme, characters, settings, etc. Then students consider the principles of design and how to use them as a guide to illustrate their story. When making the book for this project, I would typically use cardstock, but you can use cereal boxes and even printer paper. This is a great project for students to share a bit about themselves and get to know each other. The powerpoint is included in this page and shows student examples, however this project is part of a bigger bundle that includes the scaffolded worksheet and a demo video. This foam core project is a great introduction to carving and printmaking. After doing this foam core relief, I had students design and build their own foam core house. Junior high and high school students really enjoyed the project. This is available in a bundle with videos showing how to carve and make prints. Supplies used are: self healing mat, foam core boards, and niji carving knives.
I do my best to model projects using vocabulary and anticipating misconceptions I've seen over the years. Often I reference anchor charts and add elements that make the videos more interesting for students.
