Tradespeople and shopkeepers in colonial America often used artwork to identify their places of business, especially for those who could not read. In this presentation, students will view a variety of trade signs from Colonial Williamsburg. Following the slide show is a list of common colonial trades. Students choose a trade and, using the medium of their (or the teacher’s) choice, create their own sign.
This PowerPoint presentation takes the viewer on a virtual field trip to Colonial Williamsburg, a reconstruction of the Virginia settlement that played an important role leading up to the American Revolution. A complete script is included. No other teacher preparation is required.

The Mountain Farm Museum is located near the south entrance of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This PowerPoint slide show comprises 42 photographs depicting life on a typical mountain farm circa 1900. It is narrated by a complete script. In addition, a ten-question quiz with answer key and ten discussion questions are included. Students who view this presentation will have a more complete understanding of the challenges and rewards of life on an early 20th century Appalachian mountain farm.
