Chapter-by-chapter questions comprise this study guide for Scott O'Dell's novel, a first-person narrative of a Senegalese girl captured from her kingdom and enslaved on the Danish-owned Caribbean island of St. John, who participates in the enslaved revolt of 1733-1734. Each pair of chapters has 4 questions, some requiring readers to find information and explain in their own words, some requiring an opinion response, some requiring character analysis, locating evidence, analyzing author intent, e

This experiment packet guides students through the major parts of the scientific method and makes connections to a primary source from George Washington Carver while guiding students (in teams of 4) through an experiment with celery. The experiment examines how much colored water a celery stem will transport upward depending on the amount of leaves it has. You will need 3 stems of celery for each of your student teams--one with no leaves, one with few leaves, and one with many. You will also ne
Designed for upper elementary students, this presentation will give students an overview of George Washington Carver's life and significance, including authentic photos of Carver and his work. This slide presentation can be used on its own, but it is designed to be followed by a vascular plant experiment with connections to an experiment done by George Washington Carver. I have the vascular plant experiment guide also available in my store.

A supplement for the second half of the book My Name is Not Angelica by Scott O'Dell (about a young enslaved Senegalese girl participating in the enslaved revolt on the island of St. John); this assignment contains adapted excerpts from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Letter From A Birmingham Jail, as well as an excerpt from the Alabama clergymen's letter to which it replies, and draws connections between the opposing viewpoints on civil disobedience and the opposing viewpoints of Raisha and Ministe
This is a worksheet to check the understanding of students after a mini-lesson on nouns. It is suitable for 1st grade through 3rd grade or older elementary English language learners in the Emerging stage. This sheet defines a noun as a person, place or thing. I have another version of this worksheet that includes "idea" and "event" as part of the definition of a noun--suitable for older elementary learners as well as older ELLs in general.
This is a worksheet that allows students (young students 2nd-4th grade or older ELLs) who have just received a mini-lesson on proper and common nouns to demonstrate their understanding. It reviews the definitions of proper and common nouns, asks students to identify them in sentences, and to sort them. There's a cut and paste option, but students can also simply write the words in the chart instead of cutting and pasting.
This worksheet is designed to measure student understanding after a mini-lesson on nouns. It defines a noun as a person, place, thing, idea or event. Students must give examples, identify and sort types of nouns. I have another version of this worksheet for younger students that defines a noun as a person, place or thing. This worksheet is suitable for grades 3-5 or older ELLs in the Emerging stage. Cutting and pasting is optional, students can write into the chart if you prefer.
I hand-drew this for young fans of the book Ten Little Rubber Ducks by Eric Carle. Suitable for K or 1st grade, or special needs. Students must "highlight" the "th" sound and write the beginning sound of each ordinal number word (long form). Then choose a duck to decorate and write a sentence using the long form of the ordinal number word.
