Update: Now an editable Microsoft Word document instead of a pdf. Please message me if you have problems downloading! This adapted text & questions set are only to be used alongside a purchased copy of the original book. Here, adapted, abridged and modified, is the entire story of Esperanza Rising at the approximate level of Emerging and Transitioning English Language Learners. I have listed and bolded some vocabulary for each chapter, inserted several images for each chapter, and written ove
The original story is now in the public domain. This adapted version is designed for intermediate and advanced English Language Learners. It keeps most the original wording intact, which allows ELLs to use nearly the same quotations from the text as students using the original story. I have removed some remarks, adjectives and details not essential to the story. The story is embedded with over 20 images, 14 comprehension questions, and approximately 250 short definitions of higher level vocabula
This resource, consisting of an adapted text, images and 95 embedded questions is only to be used alongside (a) purchased cop(y)ies of the original text, Milkweed. Here, adapted, abridged and modified, is the entire story of Milkweed by Jerry Spinelli. Please contact me if you have issues with the formatting, and I can share my GoogleDoc version. (The previews make it look like the answer lines are poorly formatted, but when I download the file on Word, it looks fine.) Milkweed is a fiction nove
Suitable for 6th graders to adults, this one-sheet handout is a reference sheet giving seven ideas for types of hooks that students can write in an opinion or expository piece. You can use it to create a mini-lesson on how to write a hook.
This experiment packet guides students through the major parts of the scientific method and makes connections to a primary source from George Washington Carver while guiding students (in teams of 4) through an experiment with celery. The experiment examines how much colored water a celery stem will transport upward depending on the amount of leaves it has. You will need 3 stems of celery for each of your student teams--one with no leaves, one with few leaves, and one with many. You will also ne
Designed for upper elementary students, this presentation will give students an overview of George Washington Carver's life and significance, including authentic photos of Carver and his work. This slide presentation can be used on its own, but it is designed to be followed by a vascular plant experiment with connections to an experiment done by George Washington Carver. I have the vascular plant experiment guide also available in my store.
Please note the thumbnails have some off-center images but it does not look like that in the PowerPoint itself. I created this powerpoint to introduce students to the concept of bias and examples of cognitive bias. It covers "bias," the importance of skepticism, and eight common biases.

Designed for intermediate English language learners 8th grade and up, this editable adaptation of the short story "After Twenty Years" by O. Henry includes an introduction with historical context, images to aid comprehension, a vocabulary list with definitions, and six comprehension questions that ask about characters, setting, foreshadowing and plot. Note: This story is not the original text, but I remained as faithful as I could to the story and tone while creating the adaptation. The original
This packet is designed for emerging English language learners in middle school or higher. It can be used as remedial grammar instruction for any student of that age. It guides students step by step through using the correct auxiliary verb and adding "ing" with the correct spelling (doubling consonant, dropping "e" or simply adding "ing"). It starts off with a review of vowels and consonants.
This is a worksheet to check the understanding of students after a mini-lesson on nouns. It is suitable for 1st grade through 3rd grade or older elementary English language learners in the Emerging stage. This sheet defines a noun as a person, place or thing. I have another version of this worksheet that includes "idea" and "event" as part of the definition of a noun--suitable for older elementary learners as well as older ELLs in general.
This is a worksheet that allows students (young students 2nd-4th grade or older ELLs) who have just received a mini-lesson on proper and common nouns to demonstrate their understanding. It reviews the definitions of proper and common nouns, asks students to identify them in sentences, and to sort them. There's a cut and paste option, but students can also simply write the words in the chart instead of cutting and pasting.
This worksheet is designed to measure student understanding after a mini-lesson on nouns. It defines a noun as a person, place, thing, idea or event. Students must give examples, identify and sort types of nouns. I have another version of this worksheet for younger students that defines a noun as a person, place or thing. This worksheet is suitable for grades 3-5 or older ELLs in the Emerging stage. Cutting and pasting is optional, students can write into the chart if you prefer.
This is the method I teach my English language learners for restating questions. It works for the majority of question formats. I use this document as a mini-poster in my classroom to remind students of the steps to restating a question.
