These four-point rubrics can be used to score pre and post assessment writing samples for the three writing genres in the common core: informative, narrative, and opinion. These forms touch on all the relevant standards from the writing, foundational skills, and language standards sections of the CCSS.

I use this activity when I am teaching my second graders about opinion writing, to model a book review. I have intentionally written a negative review to demonstrate for my students that opinions do not always have to be favorable. I want them to see that you can express that you do not like something, but you still have to support your opinion with reasons and evidence from the text.

This is a down and dirty, straight forward practice. Can your students read and identify whether a group of words is a complete sentence or not?

My students start each day by solving a challenging math problem in their math journal.
