This is an engaging way to teach connotation and denotation. It allows students to get up and move around (if they volunteer to) and teaches these difficult concepts in a fun way. It also incorporates using these concepts in poetry, specifically "My Papa's Waltz."
There are three group activities in this document. Each activity is designed to help students understand the media's effect on it's audience. Students will engage in evaluating different media sources and completing the activities.
This organizer can be used to track character development throughout a novel or play. It is useful as it asks students to keep track of character traits and the evidence proving said trait (helpful for students who often struggle to find evidence for papers later). It then asks students to acknowledge the character's motives, beliefs and conflict.
Use this graphic organizer to keep students engaged when other classmates are giving presentations. This can be used in an content area. This can also be used in a JigSaw for articles, as students become an "expert" in one topic and then share in groups with students from different topic areas.
