Does Photosynthesis happen in the Dark? - Experimental Design Lab w/ CER

In this Biology Experiment students will determine the effect of the presence of light on photosynthesis. By using Bromothymol Blue as an indicator, students will determine if photosynthesis is taking place under various conditions by the concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide in the BTB solution. A more acidic solution means that carbon dioxide was not processed during photosynthesis and therefore photosynthesis did not take place or took place under a slower rate than the experiment exposed

Experience

I am a fifth year science teacher with experience in biology, chemistry, physics, and marine biology. This year, I am teaching Chemistry in the Earth System and Marine Science with CTE credit. Prior to coming to the PNW, I taught in Palo Alto, CA and Naperville, IL. Currently, I am involved in my school district Science Advisory putting together resources, learning objectives, and unit outlines to be utilized across the district. Additionally, I work at my district and school site to create social emotional learning resources and trainings for my school.

Teaching style

My teaching style focuses on connecting students to the world around them with inquiry based learning. Straying away from direct instruction, I hope to help guide students in exploration to come to their own understanding of the materials.

My own education history

I have a BS of Chemistry Education with an endorsement in Biology and Physics and a MA in Earth Science Education.

Additional biographical information

My Chemistry and Biology sources incorporate Earth Science topics and/or Relateable Phenomena as a way to connect students to the world around them. I suggest looking at my Year Long Standards Outline for both my Chemistry and Biology courses to see how I mix and match Earth Science NGSS with my two core classes.
