Create a "Parking Lot" for your students on large paper / poster board. Each child will need a small square (about the size of a post-it) with their name at the top of the square. Last year was my first year teaching 1st grade. I created this strategy of putting the larger number in your mind and either counting on or backwards to solve an addition or subtraction problem. This strategy works great with all levels of students (I teach students with special needs). It gives them a way to use what they already have (their fingers). This allows them to be more independent and not have to rely on manipulatives.
