Pre-Assessment Dance Quiz

This is a Pre-Assessment tool to give at the beginning of the year to assess prior knowledge of your dance students. It helps you to know what they know and don't know yet which helps you to better plan for that particular class of students.

"Choreographic Process" Worksheet / Discussion Questions

These are great opening questions for students to discuss with a partner and as a class before learning about the choreographic process. I use this as an opening lesson before assignment any choreography assignment or bringing in a guest artist. This helps students to understand the basic steps to the creative process of creating a dance.

Dance Terminology Sheet & QUIZ

I use this for my Contemporary / 2nd semester Unit for Beginning, Intermediate, & Advanced students. I teach at least 10 terms every 2 weeks and then give them the Terminology Quiz mid-semester as well as at the end of the semester as part of their final exam. I typically will add Movement Recognition to the final quiz where they must write the correct term to movements I demonstrate physically.

Dance Element Video Assignment

You can use this half sheet form for students to observe and identify the Dance Elements seen in any video clip of choreography you show them. I use this with any style of dance to help my students analyze dance on others and learn to speak about dance through the lens of the 5 Basic Elements: Time, Space, Body, Movement, & Energy/Quality. This also teaches students to analyze dance in more of an objective way instead of subjectively or based on emotion only.

"Comparing Dance Styles" LESSON (Hip Hop & Jazz)

This is great to teach after exploring two contrasting dance styles. It asks the students to recall, compare, & make conclusions about each the styles while also recognizing the similarities & differences between the two. I use this at the end of first semester after teaching my Hip Hop & Jazz Units. I do a similar assignment second semester comparing two other styles (ex. Contemporary & Musical Theater).

"Get To Know You" Dance Questionnaire

Great for the 1st day of school to get to know your students! It gives them a safe place to be honest about their hobbies, interests, or fears about taking a dance class. I also like it as an option for them to share about any medical conditions or recent injuries they may have to help you plan accordingly as a teacher.

"End of Year" Reflection & Feedback Form

I ask all of my dance students to complete this form at the end of the year. It serves two great purposes. They have to articulate what they learned but also gives me feedback as a teacher. I enjoy seeing which units or concepts excited them the most, but also get to hear from them what they would like to learn more about. This ultimately helps me to plan for the following year!

Improvisation Lesson "Mirroring"

This is a great 1st Lesson for any level of dance student 7th-12th grade. I always use this as my introduction to Improvisation for my high school students. They don't have to physical tough one another yet and it helps them to build trust. This lesson can be done in ONE class period. You can add variations over the next two days...switching partners, using different body parts (lower body, legs, hips, head, etc). You can also do this lesson to different tempos of music to inspire their creativi

Costume Request Form

If you have costumes for your dance program that are loaned out or used from year to year, I have my student choreographers fill out this form. They fill out what they are looking for and if we need to purchase something, we take this information off this form to help. It teaches them time management and organization in the preparation process for our productions. This also facilitates peer collaboration because they must turn this in to our "Costume Manager" student leader.

Experience

I have 35 years of dance experience and have been teaching Dance in High Schools for the past 20 years. I have a B.F.A. in Dance and a Physical Education teaching credential. My passion is teaching dance to high schoolers at all skill levels from Beginning to Advanced. I love building healthy & safe culture in our dance program, creating community for all those involved.

Teaching style

I have been trained in several dance styles throughout my life through studio training as well as college and professional performing. I teach the styles of Jazz, Hip Hop, & Contemporary. My teaching includes breaking down technique in several styles, the basic elements of dance, tools for the choreographic process, terminology, and knowledge of dance production. I teach the fundamentals to body alignment, musicality, rhythm, flexibility, choreography, and performance.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I have taught at 3 different high schools in two different counties, developing & growing each dance program to a place of health and legacy. I am a member of the NDEO (National Dance Educator Organization). I earned my BFA in Dance proudly from Cal State University Long Beach, one of the top 10 dance programs nationally. I have performed professionally with Benita Bike DanceArt & BARE Dance Company. I now enjoy inspiring the next generation to express themselves creatively through the art of dance.

My own education history

I trained in dance since the age of five at Just Plain Dancin' & Co. in CA. I then earned my BFA in Dance from CSULB where I have the privilege of performing over 15 different works on stage. I then had the honor of performing professionally for two small companies in the Los Angeles area before starting my teaching career at high schools.
