Have you ever asked students to define vocabulary words in a novel, only to have them copy down the first definition they find, whether or not it is relevant to the context of the sentence? I have created these sheets to require students to justify the definition they chose, based on the context of the sentence in which the vocabulary word is found. This is a 56-page, chapter-by-chapter vocabulary sheet set for The Secret School by Avi. The full product is 56 pages. I would recommend either

AR sticker book

Our second graders tend to want to read AR books that are below their level so that they can earn more AR points or increase their average on quizzes. I created this simple sticker book to encourage students to read books that are actually on their level. If a student takes a quiz, I check to see if they received a 100% and if the book was actually in their assigned reading level. If both criteria are met, they receive a sticker. Amazing what a little sticker motivation will do!

Website Request Form

I teach 4th and 5th grade Computers. On Fridays, students are allowed to play educational games and they are always asking me to add a new website to the list of sites they are allowed to use. Most of the time, the websites they request are not appropriate. Asking them to fill out this form greatly reduces the amount of requests I get, and also helps me to vet the requests that I do get.

About the store

Experience

I have taught for twenty-seven years in public and private schools. I have taught and love both social studies and language arts. My favorite genre of literature is historical fiction, and will be one focus of my store. Materials for both ELA and history will be a focus as well.

Teaching style

My teaching style is eclectic. I tend to have a "bag of tricks" from which to pull and my students never know what might happen from one day to the next. I believe that students should learn not only the material, but real world skills, so I try to create learning environments where students can learn cooperation, teamwork, etc. I want my students to learn not only how to work individually, but also in a group. I also try to give the students choices when it is appropriate and differentiate as much as possible.

My own education history

I have a BA in Elementary Education from Murray State University (KY) with endorsements in middle school language arts and social sciences. I am working toward a Master's degree. I have also attended numerous workshops in language arts, reading, science, and social studies.

Additional biographical information

I enjoy creating new materials, particularly for reading/language arts. I love to read a new novel and create an entire unit around that novel from start to finish.
