This activity could be whole group, small group, or be completed as a center. The overall idea for the activity is to help students understand that they are only using the number of bears that they have been asked to use within the problem. The other bears not needed will be under a cup (the den) until needed. For subtraction, the students will move the bears they subtract to the den as well.
