Create Your Own Modern Myth Writing Activity

Created by

In this activity, students will choose a modern phenomenon or issue (such as why the Wi-Fi goes down at the worst time) and they write a myth to explain why this happens or how it came to be. This activity is a great follow-up to Episode 1 of CrashCourse Mythology, but it can also be a fun stand-alone assignment that would be easy to leave for a sub! What's Included:Directions for students to write their myth and space for them to write their myth on the worksheetA rubric to assess the mythA wo

CrashCourse Mythology Ep. 1 "What is Myth?" Comprehension Questions

If you are getting ready to introduce a Mythology unit or class, CrashCourse Mythology's first episode is a great anticipatory activity! It defines Mythology in a way that is inoffensive to religious students and explains what Mythology is -- and isn't. I used this CrashCourse as the backbone for my Mythology class with great success, but even if you don't plan on using all of the later episodes, this is a good introduction. The resource has six comprehension questions that follow along with the

This project allows students to explore mythology from a culture of their choosing and works nicely as a final project for a Mythology course, though it could also work as a summative assessment for a Mythology unit. Included: Directions for ProjectRubric/Checklist for easy grading

Norse God or Goddess Poster Project

This is a fun, quick project to help students dive into a particular god or goddess from Norse mythology. It is flexible enough to use in multiple contexts and could be easily modified for various grade-levels. I allow students to choose to work by themselves or with a partner, which gives them the option to collaborate. I also have students present their posters to the class to give them practice public speaking and being a good audience. Included: Directions Sheet - goes over poster expectatio

If you are teaching The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and want to give your students a different perspective and some historical context for the novel, this video does a great job! It is about 45 minutes long and is produced by the History Channel. The sheet I have created has both fill-in-the-blank and short-answer questions. Many are more surface-level comprehension questions, but some do require students to think and analyze. The questions are in the order the information appears i

I also sell this product with the answer key in my store, but if you just want to sample my work and you don't need an answer key, here is the free worksheet. This video is a great sub activity for when you are reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The link to the video by The History Channel can be found on the worksheet.

Experience

I have taught across the ELA spectrum, from remedial 8th grade to AP Literature and Composition. I've also taught a high school Mythology elective and loved it!

Teaching style

I tend to see myself as a guide on the path to knowledge. I try to spend very little time lecturing and instead allow students the time and space to discover the content for themselves. I definitely do incorporate direct instruction when needed, but most of my class time is devoted to students working independently or collaboratively with a partner or small group. My philosophy is that students should work at least as hard if not harder for their knowledge and grade!

My own education history

I obtained my BA in English and my MA in Curriculum and Assessment from Vanguard University of Southern California. I also have an MA in Learning and Technology from Western Governor's University.
