Using this pre-test to introduce your genetics unit will frame student thinking and give you insight on which concepts students will need the most help with. Big pictures and simplified definitions also help in the vocabulary preview to link abstract concepts to something that a student can see! This works well as the start to a genetics unit and an everyday review at the start of class during your genetics unit.

This extension activity can help your students further understand what makes metals, nonmetals, and metalloids unique. Having students create their own made-up element and apply various qualities to it, allows for a deeper understanding of what qualities and vocabulary are tied to what kind of element. You could also use this as an overview of elements and atoms by having them create an element and place it next to your own periodic table.
