About the store
I have 35 years experience as first a librarian with many hats, then college Library Director, and finally English Professor. I served on too many committees, for which I was expected to write reports, because that's what English teachers do, right? And I enjoyed being the campus consultant first for Writing Across the Curriculum and then for Critical Thinking (which was essentially just another way to sneak more writing into my peers' classes).

Sample Letters of Reference or Recommendation for Students and Colleagues

Letters of reference follow a standard form and generally employ an all-seeing but distant professional voice. In other words, they are pretty dry. Years ago, after boring myself into a stupor writing the things, I decided I'd write a letter that while professional, had a voice. The sample letters that follow won each of the students a scholarship, or admission to a university, or a major award, such as a national office in an honor society. Similar letters either secured a colleague's teach

Packet for Unit on Teaching “How to Prepare for and Take an Essay Exam”

During the years I’ve taught English 101, students have come to me with questions about their writing for other courses. One of the most common questions is, “my prof. said we were having a Blue Book Exam. What does that mean?” So, I decided to create a series of activities that would not only familiarize students with the basics of taking an essay exam but would also afford practice in doing so. In short, they eventually take an essay exam over HOW TO PREPARE FOR and TAKE AN ESSAY EXAM. My

Data Collection Sheet for Student Letter of Reference

We've all had them -- the seemingly endless requests for Reference Letters for scholarships, awards, or an office. When this file is completed by the requester, you are able to see relevant information you need to write the letter -- and it's all in one place. Students would sometimes tell me it was a lot of work; I'd just quirk my eyebrows, laugh, and say "So what you're telling me is I'm the one who should be working harder than you in the admissions process." They would laugh sheepishly, an

Experience

I have 35 years experience as first a librarian with many hats, then college Library Director, and finally English Professor. I served on too many committees, for which I was expected to write reports, because that's what English teachers do, right? And I enjoyed being the campus consultant first for Writing Across the Curriculum and then for Critical Thinking (which was essentially just another way to sneak more writing into my peers' classes).

Teaching style

Lecture, opening question, a great deal of collaborative work involving students and other teachers, learning community, and hands on writing instruction in a computer assisted writing lab. I rarely sit, if that tells you something.

Awards & shining teacher moments

Numerous awards for teaching and innovation. But my finest "awards" came in the loving notes students gave me at the end of each semester. I still have every single one.

My own education history

I hold degrees in English and Library Science. My best memories of school, however, are from the military and public schools I attended as a child. Even then I realized how hard teachers work. They inspired me to absolutely love learning. Yes, I just split an infinitive, but I'll spare you my lecture on why that is such a silly rule.

Additional biographical information

My interests include laughing, writing poetry, loving my friends and my family of seven children (and a sprinkling of grandchildren), reading, genealogy, and writing about the antics of my Labrador Retriever on Facebook.
