Ark of the Covenant Gold - Math Activity

This is a fun math activity that I have used for several years in grades 6—8. It references the description from the Bible to calculate the amount of gold used to cover the Ark of the Covenant. Once the students determine the amount of gold used, they can calculate the value of the gold using the current price. The students discover that the value of the gold exceeds a staggering ten million dollars! The math concepts used in this activity are measurement conversions, the calculations of surfac

Days of Creation - Math Lesson

Although this lesson was certainly not designed exclusively for Christian school teachers (or Christian homeschoolers), it should be of particular interest to them. I know that math teachers in Christian schools (of which I was one for some 15 years) are often interested in relating math lessons to the Bible whenever possible. This lesson provides a way they can do that. This is a math activity that uses the creation story from the Bible as a “springboard” for the students to investigate differ

My Most Popular Math Incentive

Over the years, I have done a lot of fun and creative activities with my math students, but the one thing that has resonated with the most students is Math Bucks. A Fun Math Activity: A Math Treasure Hunt Game

A really challenging and fun math activity which is especially great for review. My students absolutely love this game. They solve a series of problems which are the clues to discovering the "treasure." This FREE download includes complete instructions, a sample handout, and all the forms you'll need to create your own math treasure hunt games. When I first started making these treasure hunts, I would invariably make mistakes in the clues. (That was embarrassing!) The forms are a way to insure t

Guess Your Number Math Magic Trick

This is a well-known trick based on binary numbers. My version has a clean, professional appearance. Students think of a secret number 1 - 60. The teacher then shows 6 charts and asks which of the charts contain the number. The teacher then announces the number correctly! The trick is an excellent way to introduce binary numbers.

Guess Your Number Magic Trick Demonstration

This is an amazing trick with numbers. Students think of a 2-digit number, perform 2 simple calculations, and find a symbol that corresponds to their numbers on a chart. The teacher picks the correct symbol. The trick is repeated two more times, and each time the teacher picks the correct symbol. The last page uses algebra to explain how the trick works.
