Teaching style

With over a decade of experience teaching U.S. History, my teaching style centers on making history accessible, relevant, and thought-provoking. I approach history as a rich tapestry of stories that shape our world today, using primary source analysis, interactive discussions, and multimedia presentations to bring the past to life. I encourage students to think like historians—questioning evidence, evaluating perspectives, and constructing their own interpretations. This inquiry-driven method fosters a deeper understanding of history’s complexities and its relevance to contemporary society. Recognizing diverse learning styles, I incorporate traditional lectures, collaborative projects, and hands-on activities to engage all learners. My goal is to cultivate critical thinkers who master historical content while developing skills in analysis, communication, and empathy. By connecting the past to the present, I aim to inspire curiosity and leave a lasting impact on students’ academic and personal journeys.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I am a proud Combat Veteran of the United States Army, having served with distinction during my 20-year military career. My service has been recognized through numerous military citations, including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, honors that reflect my dedication and sacrifice. Transitioning from military service to education, I have continued to strive for excellence in my second career. As a teacher, I have been honored to receive the Teacher of the Year award twice, a recognition of my commitment to inspiring and empowering students. These achievements, both in service to my country and in the classroom, underscore my dedication to making a meaningful impact wherever I am called to serve.

My own education history

After proudly serving 20 years in the United States Army, I transitioned into academia to pursue my passion for history and education. My academic journey began with an Associate Degree in History, providing the foundation for my studies. I then earned a Bachelor of Science in American History, with a minor in Pedagogy, combining content expertise with effective teaching strategies. Building on this, I pursued a Master of Arts in U.S. History, focusing on Southern Race and Culture, where I explored the complexities of regional identities and societal transformations. Finally, I achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in American History (Comprehensive), a rigorous program that allowed me to examine the depth and breadth of America’s historical narrative. My military service instilled discipline, leadership, and a global perspective, which now complement my academic expertise. This unique combination of experiences informs my teaching and research, fostering a dedication to preserving and sharing the stories of America’s past.
