Frida & Diego in Detroit - English
This unit includes 17 days of lessons (approx. 60 min) with warm-ups, SEL check-ins, and activities for listening, reading, and writing focused on the lives of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera as well as their time in Detroit. This unit was built to complement the Bright Walls Murals in Jackson, MI, where it was taught. This unit is an English Language version for young readers, created from the German version also on this site.

K-12 teacher with 19 years of classroom experience and all grade levels. I mostly taught lower-level German at the elementary school and middle school level for high school credit. I have also taught German levels 1-3 at the high school, as well as, English Language Arts and A.P. Lit and Comp.
Teaching style
Although I started teaching from a textbook at the high school, I created my own materials for the elementary students, starting German language instruction in kindergarten. I fell in love with Tina Hargaden and CI Liftoff several years ago and have been adapting lessons for each class, building themed units, and supporting colleagues ever since.
Awards & shining teacher moments
This past year, my German 1A students (former 7th graders) all passed the high school 1B exam and earned a second high school credit with one year of instruction!
Recognized as Teacher of the Year in 2007.
My own education history
I started learning German in high school. I was able to participate in and exchange my junior year and fell in love with the language and culture. After that experience, I studied German in college, spent my junior year in Munich with Wayne State University and Ludwig Maximillians Universität. After graduating with a BA in German and International Studies, I returned to Eastern Michigan University to earn my teaching certificate, which started my teaching career. I started the following fall teaching German as a special in a German Magnet elementary school in Jackson, MI. I moved up to the high school and taught upper-level English for two years before returning to German when a colleague retired. German instruction has been a part of my daily work ever since!
