About the store
I earned my degree in 1986 and have in the field of special education since graduation. I worked at the local mental retardation board for 17 years. I then worked for an independent living center, where I was a school advocate specialist and an ADA specialist and the Northernwest Ohio program co-ordinator for Vocational Rehabilitation Services, PCA program. During this time I was appointed by the governor to the Consumor Advisory Council. I was also a member of th NW Ohio TBI committee. I presently am teaching at a charter school where I have the sped students for math, social studies and language arts, they spend science and specials with their regular class. .

Experience

Teaching style

I teach with leveled material and as much hands on as I can. I use computer programs, video's and teach based on the students interests. If available I use printable pictures and coloring pages on specific topics. Some examples, my guys like fishing, so I have a special bio fish tank, there are 3 sections and fish for each type of section. We also took a trip to Cabela's, one to see the animals and fish two,to have lunch at McDonald's where each was given $5.00 for lunch and had to purchase appropriatly. when talking about the Viking's and Columbus we made the ships. Our next project is History in our own backyard, the war of 1812, we will visit a local fort and the museum.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I received the Glass Apple Award from a local TV station this year. This was done by being nominated by someone. I have my unit of the American Legion auxiliary president, County Council president and The first district president. At the present I am the chapeau of 8/40 and hold a departmental chairmanship.

My own education history

i have a bach. of education degree, with intensive major in kinesiotherapy, physical ed. k-12, special ed moderate to severe and an art minor. i have a masters work in art education and presently working on education specialist focus on pre school special education.

Additional biographical information

I am state certified in alternate assessment, and CPI. I have presented at the Solidarity conference, on the topic of social security benifits for those with disabilities. I have had several pieces of art work travel Ohio with the very special arts tours. I was commissioned to do a piece for an art show about veterans. I have sold 3 art pieces at shows for those with disabilities. I was one of 8 co authors in an art/science learning project at the toledo museum of art. This was a year long project where art was used to teach science. This was the last of a series that was in conjunctin of toledo area resources. Lesson plans and a loan box was developed for this project.
