About the store

Experience

I'm a full-time math tutor for grades 8 through college calculus, including the math portion of most major standardized tests. I've been in business for myself since 1997. Pronouns: She/Her

Teaching style

Behind every worksheet I have made is a student who needed it. The reason I like being a tutor is that I can see where a student is and take them forward from there. Teaching math is a conversation - sometimes it's explaining, sometimes it's guided discovery, sometimes it's manipulatives, and sometimes it's just a bunch of practice. Whatever it takes. My tutoring, worksheets, and emails are all generated by a real human - me!

Awards & shining teacher moments

• It's a great moment for me when I hear my students have been sharing what I taught them with OTHER students. Or that moment when I can see the spark in their eye because they just "got" something and think it's cool. • In January of 2018 NCTM's Mathematics Teacher Magazine published an article of mine, about a graphic organizer for problem-solving. (if you have an NCTM membership, you can read it at: https://www.nctm.org/Publications/Mathematics-Teacher/2018/Vol111/Issue4/A-Graphic-Organizer-for-Problem-Solving/

My own education history

I have a B.S. in Mathematics with minors in Art History and Biology from the Honors Program at Salem State University. I'm a member of the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Math). By staying in touch with the math education community I am able to stay up-to-date with current issues and topics. A couple summers ago I took Jo Boaler's online course, How To Learn Math for Teachers and the effects are starting to show up in my worksheets. I believe that teachers can always be learning.

Additional biographical information

In my spare time I go birding, or draw, or read. Come friend me at JaneGilletteMathTutor on Instagram! I go for quality over quantity. There are #ThursdayMathWorksheet posts that includes a blog entry inspired by the featured weekly worksheet. I also post math tips, conversation prompts, and the occasional nerdy math picture with my kiddo.
