In 2002, the movie Signs popularized crop circles as landing markers for alien spacecraft. While the movie didn’t match today’s reality, crop circles are still being created around the globe. While the majority of crop circles have been proven to be hoaxed, there are still some that defy explanation. This 46-page learning modules draws information from print and internet sources to present a balanced view of the crop circle phenomenon. The five student activities look at unique features of sel

This packet introduces students to three of the time tracking methods used by the ancient Mayans: the long count, the Tzolkin and the Haab calendars. Students learn to convert the long count to days and then learn how to convert the days into the Tzolkin and Haab "dates". Using calculators, students work through six problems and ultimately calculate the Mayan date for December 21, 2012, which is the end of the 13th cycle. In this learning packet, students work through an algorithm that leads them to predict the month and day of Easter for any year (from 1583 onwards). Because the date of Easter is tied to the movement of the moon and earth around the sun, it can be predicted mathematically. This packet contains teacher notes, references, and an answer key (calculations necessary to predict the month/day of Easter for 2013). This packet would be appropriate for earth science, astronomy, or applied math classes

Experience

I am a former secondary science and math teacher. I've taught life sciences, biological sciences, and math on the Middle School level and Earth and Space Sciences and Meteorology on the Senior High level. I've also spent a few semesters as an adjunct instructor for the City Colleges of Chicago. I am currently retired.

Teaching style

I like to create lessons and activities that challenge the students and get them involved. Many of my posted and future posts will contain activities where the student will need to create and interpret graphs, calculate answers with a calculator, and/or formulate a hypothesis.

My own education history

During my undergrad years at Penn State, I majored in Meteorology, but also thought about teaching. In addition to my B.S. in meteorology, I also earned an instructional I certificate in Earth and Space sciences. For the next seven years, I served as a Senior high and middle school science teacher. Many of the lessons I've posted and plan to post for sale were developed while I was working in the classroom. Years later, I went back to Penn State and earned an M. Ed in training and development and finished my teaching career educating adults in the corporate setting.
