German A1 - Picture Vocabulary (Telling Time with Public Clocks / Normaluhren)

This two-page handout includes a color printable of assorted public clocks with the times written out, mostly in colloquial time ( "Zeit im Umgangssprache" / "inoffizielle Zeit"). The second page shows the same clocks in greyscale, but with a blank line underneath instead of text. This page can be used as a homework assignment or for a test.

Experience

I previously taught as a contractor for a firm in Charleston, SC providing language instruction in corporate settings. Clients I've worked with are Daimler, Bosch and IFA-Rotorion.

Teaching style

I like to blend simple listening and reading exercises with a healthy dose of grammar. I try to get the students to start expressing themselves in German at the earliest opportunity while providing real-time feedback. My handouts on TpT grew from the rudimentary notes emailed to my students at the end of each class, becoming more elaborate and detailed over time. Unable to consistently find good materials online that focused squarely on the topics I was teaching, it was easier just to create new materials from scratch. These notes (plus many newer ones) are now available to you on TpT.

My own education history

I have a B.S. in industrial design from the Georgia Institute of Technology. My German studies began in high school and continued through college, where I earned the school's equivalent of a minor in the language. In the summer of 1989 I had the opportunity to study German at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen. Since graduating, I've translated German for a law firm and also traveled throughout Germany as a salesman. Other languages I've studied are Russian, French and Spanish.
