Students each solve addition problems in different ways. This is 1 week worth of math lessons (20-30 min. per day) focusing on how to use Number Line Strategy and Counting On Strategy to solve addition problems. It then compares the two so students can pick the one that works for them and feels comfortable using it instead of always counting on their fingers. This is a week long unit (20-30 minutes/day) covering adding and subtracting 10 is aligned to the CC standard 1.NBT.5. I have used this with my 1st graders with great success! There is mathematical reasoning, practice problems, manipulative use (hundreds chart) and higher level questioning. Each days lesson also comes with a Ticket Out the Door to do a quick mastery assessment. There will be more Common Core aligned math lessons posted to my store using the same format and vocabulary!
After the students really have a good understanding of addition, I teach them some memorizing strategies and explain that the goal is to just know the answer to the problems. I was asked to be part of a committee to adapt the Common Core Standards for the state of Arizona in 2010. This really helped me understand the standards and how they can be used in the classroom.

I'm proud to say that I am a graduate of Indiana University. I also earned my Master's Degree in Reading, Writing and Literacy from a great program at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
