Ionic compound formation - dry lab (works at home or in the classroom)

This lesson is good practice to help students understand what the subscripts mean in ionic compounds, and why the different ions get the subscripts they have. I use it after we have discussed ions and charges, as well as the model of ionic bonding. Students will answer a few targeted pre-lab questions, then cut out "ion cards" on which they will draw dots to indicate valence electrons (like a Lewis model.) The students then arrange the atoms that they cut out in such a way that the negative ions

About the store

Experience

I first started teaching in Gallup New mexico. I taught Biology and Earth science at an alternative high school from 2005-2008. I then moved to Mount Shasta CA and have been teaching Chemistry, Anatomy, and General Science since 2009.

Teaching style

Hands on and experiential. Students learn by doing and experiencing. I have always loved exploring and figuring out why things are the way they are - I try to bring that into my teaching. I try to use a lot of analogies to daily life and teach the logic of why things are the way they are.

My own education history

BA Environmental Studies - Warren Wilson College, Swananoa NC Masters secondary education - Western New Mexico University

Additional biographical information

I am the son of two teachers - so it was in the genes I guess. I grew up in rural Massachusetts spending as much time as I could in the woods. I went to college in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, and again - spent lots of time in the woods. Out of college I joined the Peace Corps and was in Panama for three years working on water sanitation - clean drinking water through gravity fed water systems and composting toilets. I met my wife in Panama, as she was a volunteer at the same time as me. We returned to the States and moved to Gallup NM, where I got into teaching. In 2008 we move to Mount Shasta to start our family, and have been here since.
