During my high school and college years, as well as during my teaching career, I have tutored and taught children with a wide range of disabilities, including, but not limited to the following: Autism, Down Syndrome, cognitive disabilities, emotional disturbances, other health impairment, specific learning disabilities, ADD, ADHD, hearing impaired, and spinal muscular atrophy. I have also worked with gifted and talented students.
I also believe in taking a student centered approach to teaching. I believe that students and teachers are co-learners; both bring new and fresh ideas into the classroom. This approach also allows for critical thinking to occur, because students are asked to both reflect and share ideas during instruction. Plus, having this classroom set up allows for a healthy and trusting bond to form between students and the teacher.
