Have been teaching math for 2 years in a charter high school. The classes I teach include Intermediate Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 as well as a short Data Analysis course.
These worksheets (2 pages, front + back) will help students understand algebra tiles by considering their dimensions, perimeter, and area. It also helps students begin to identify tiles by their area with a simple matching activity. I recommend giving this worksheet to students as soon as you introduce the tiles to give them a strong conceptual understanding of the tiles.
We have all taught students how to multiply algebraic expressions like -4x*3 and 3(2x+1) by multiplying together the parts, but students get confused about the rules. Help your students develop conceptual understanding of multiplying algebra using pictures of groups! This folder contains 4 worksheets 1. Multiplying with groups for expressions like 4x*3 using (+ a warm-up) 2. Multiplying with negative numbers in groups half-sheet 3. Distributing with groups 4. Distributing with groups including
These worksheets give students a conceptual understanding of sector area of a circle by relating angles to fractions of the whole circle. There are three worksheets 1. A worksheet on breaking down areas of a circle into parts 2. A half-sheet resource on common angles inside a circle. 3. A worksheet on using fractions to compute sector area. NOTE: students can choose to use a decimal or reduce the fraction to find the partial area Together, these worksheets are great for students needing scaffol
Looking for a fun geometry activity to help students practice using a compass and straightedge? This product includes printable directions for two different geometric designs - > a simple star and a traditional rosette design that dates back to ancient Islamic mathematics. Students can follow the steps and then color their designs! You will also get a file with the start of the designs to print out for students.
These resources teach students the beginnings of solving equations by representing equations using algebra tiles on a scale. Includes 1. A worksheet on adding/subtracting a number (or 'x's) from both sides of an equation 2. A worksheet on dividing each side of an equation by a number (using groups) 3. A half-sheet warm up that covers all the above skills 4. A practice worksheet that transitions students to using the symbolic form of an equation. 5. An alternative practice worksheet with more one
Looking for resources to help your students understand percentages better? Or are you looking for ways to introduce percents in accessible ways? Either way, this pack has many great resources you can use. The first two worksheets help students visualize percentages using 100 circles. The third focuses on the tried-and-true method of multiplying. Worksheets 4 and 5 give students an understanding of relating percentages to fractions. The last worksheet is a check for understanding to make sure tha
This product contains 3 worksheets on circle basics. 1. A worksheet on vocabulary like radius, diameter, and circumference, as well as reviewing area/perimeter. 2. A half-sheet where students start to practice using formulas for circumference and area in two ways (writing answers as decimals vs. in terms of pi) 3. A worksheet on continuing to use those formulas fluently for different types of problems. All worksheets are Google Docs and are fully editable.
This folder contains 4 worksheets. 1. A group work task on developing a definition for a polygon. (They sort shapes into polygons and NOT polygons and make a definition based on this) 2. A worksheet on the names of polygons based on the number of sides 3. A worksheet on the total degrees inside of a polygon based on how many triangles it is made up of (conceptual understanding) 4. A worksheet using the total angles to solve for angles inside designs
These package includes 8 worksheets on slope. It covers everything from how we can tell if points are linear, to why we describe lines with slope, to slopes as steepness, to negative slopes. It includes a partner activity and a cut-and-paste activity. These worksheet are great for students who are brand-new to learning about slope, or who need a better conceptual understanding of slope. The worksheet are good for students needing more support/ scaffolding.
This partner fraction activity is a lot of fun for students. Students get to add their own funny spin on fraction word problems in classic mad-libs fashion. These problems cover "taking part of" a whole number, fraction addition and subtraction, and a problem on fraction division. All of the problems are at a level where students can draw pictures or use manipulatives to solve problems. This worksheet is good for students at all levels of understanding fractions and provides for built-in diffe
This is a one-page worksheet on roots that explains the concepts behind roots and includes practice. Student develop fluency by practicing answering root questions using answers to exponent problems. The worksheet also explains why square roots are usually written without the "little 2" and connects the idea of square roots to squares.
These worksheets are designed to help students start being able to write expressions based on word problems and understand how expressions arise from situations. Students will work with problems without a variable and then use their own math to decide what mathematical expressions are correct. Students also will look at how the language in the problem might give a hint as to the mathematical operations they should be using. There are two worksheets included (both Google Docs). The first is to
This worksheet focuses on the fact that we can write the addition of variables as multiplication (x+x+x=3x). It explores the connection between addition and multiplication using real-life problems to give students a solid conceptual understanding. It also gives students practice shortening expressions (ex. b+b+a+a+a=2b+3a). The 1-page worksheet is a google doc and is fully editable.
This is a one-page worksheet introducing exponents to students. It explains why we use exponents, and then gives students some practice with them. If you like this resource check out my resource on roots or on zero exponents!
This product includes TWO worksheets on Motion vs. Time Graphs. The first has students begin graphing the motions of people walking, running, and going backward (to see how speed and direction correspond to slope). The second worksheet has students use their skills with slope to identify the motion based on the graph. This product is great for helping any student access the ideas of motion vs. time graphs :)

Experience
Have been teaching math for 2 years in a charter high school. The classes I teach include Intermediate Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2 as well as a short Data Analysis course.
Teaching style
I'm not a perfect teacher but one of my strengths is developing lessons that develop a strong conceptual understanding.
Almost all of my resources include scaffolding so students can get entry into the math. I never want students to feel like they are missing something or aren't able to learn new things.
My own education history
I have a B.S. in Mathematics from the UMN Twin Cities and I have a license to teach 5-12 mathematics in Minnesota.
TPT is the largest marketplace for PreK-12 resources, powered by a community of educators.
