This is a quick escape room for students to do in groups to check for understanding after reviewing the elements of poetry. My students LOVED this assignment and had a lot of fun competing against each other. Plus, it was a great learning check!
This is an assessment using google forms. It asks students what the elements of poetry are, what the definition of each element is, and covers haiku, free verse, sensory, acrostic, hyperbole, personification, simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. There are 13 questions and a variety of multiple choice, multiple choice grid, and check boxes.
During our poetry unit, I had students compile a poetry book including at least one diamante poem, one haiku, one acrostic, one sensory poem, and one free verse poem. Of course, students could do more than that, and I encouraged them to. Here is the rubric I used to assess students. Feel free to use the same rubric or adjust how you like. This is a google drive file, so you can edit the requirements that fit your teaching style.
You can edit this product on your google drive for any figurative language types you are working with. I like to use two at a time, but you can also pick one at a time. The copy I have uploaded is for hyperbole and personification and provides an example of each. You can also make your chart bigger or smaller. I prefer to print this out for students, but you can make this a google assignment as well. There are no limits!
This assignment includes two poems by Shel Silverstein to help students understand voice. I did this as an independent assignment with my students to make sure each student was really thinking about their answers.
