This is a graphic organizer designed to help students organize their approach to nonfiction texts. Students are exposed to a list of text features, text types, and text structures in order to choose which ones fit the text in front of them. Students are also able to identify author's purpose, key vocabulary, and take notes on key details to determine two main ideas. These features can all be aligned with the Common Core Standards for informational texts as well as with MAP NWEA.

This is a bundle of 4 graphic organizers. The first is a graphic organizer for students to take notes on an educational video. There is room to record three details and a main idea. There is also space for students to create a sketch and label it. This organizer is useful when leaving plans for a substitute...and the sketching portion keeps ALL students on task for the substitute. The second organizer is a simple four box organizer. It gives students sentence starters and transition words that align to the Common Core. Once students use this graphic organizer to site information and organize their information consistently, they will be able to write without the organizer. I see them use either the same or different transition words but understand the format in which to write to convey their ideas.

This is a template for teaching how to write an acrostic poem. Attention: I created this the week before our school went to the see film Bears so the instructions tell students to write an acrostic about bears. Change the topic to whatever you like.

I created this rubric to help students monitor their progress towards developing strong organizational skills. Students are able to set a goal and record if they reached the goal each week. Organization becomes increasingly important as students reach the upper grades and identifying specific components of how to stay organized while allowing students to do a self-check on these components weekly helps them internalize them.

This document contains all of the "I can" kid-friendly standards for fifth grade and allows teachers or students to record when and how a student mastered each standard. It is also color-coded to match the MAP strand colors.

This is a SIMPLE graphic organizer for students to cite examples of figurative language as they read. I have posters/other resources for students with definitions of types of figurative language to look for (similes, metaphors, idioms, etc.) and students fill in the organizer with the type of figurative language and example from the text. Students may struggle at first but once they get the hang of this, they will want to have one by there side whenever they read!

These questions allow students to reflect on the week. They allow students to feel pride in achievements while making plans to improve for the week ahead. Done consistently, I have seen this help produce great results with students.

Included in this download are two super simple math centers. One is more money where students need to show different ways to create a predetermined amount of money. The subtraction page gives students the opportunity to create their own subtraction sentences using cards they draw from a deck. These are very simple. Enjoy!
