Kellen O'Connor
This is a lesson on graphing quadratics. The lesson comes with all needed materials. The package includes guided notes, practice problems, a quiz, and the Smart Notebook file (if you use it). The lesson discusses the 3 main forms of a quadratic (standard, vertex, intercept) and how we can use those different forms to graph a quadratic function. Students are asked to find key points, such as the vertex, x-intercepts, and y-intercept. Inside the notes, there are several examples, designed so

This lesson is an introduction to complex numbers. The lesson covers the basic definition of the imaginary number, simplifying radicals with a negative radicand, solving quadratic equations with imaginary solutions, graphing complex numbers, and adding/subtracting complex numbers. As with all my lessons, the package includes guided notes, separate practice problems (homework), a quiz, and the Smart Notebook files that corresponds to the notes. All files are in both PDF and Word formats, so yo

This is a complete lesson plan on solving quadratic equations using square roots. The beginning of the lesson reviews basic square root properties, and then the lesson introduces the idea of having two solutions (a positive and negative square root) and applies that idea to solving quadratic equations. As with all my lesson plans, the package includes guided notes (PDF and Word formats), practice problems (homework), a quiz, and then corresponding Smart Notebook file. Everything you need to t

This is a lesson on solving quadratic equations by factoring. There are several different ways to teach factoring, but this lesson is designed around factoring by grouping (also known as the AC method, split the middle, etc.). The lesson starts with a review of factoring by grouping, and then it makes the transition to quadratics with 3 terms. There are several examples to do as a class, and then several examples for students to do on their own. This lesson also addresses the special case of

Teaching style

I believe that learning mathematics does not mean memorizing steps. Learning mathematics means understanding the "big picture" and being able to make predictions. When I teach, I spend time talking about how the topic is relevant to our study and how it relates to other material we have already studied. If students see the value in what they are doing, they are move likely to understand it.
