To practice perimeter, area, and volume student (1) model "painting drywall" with a spoonful of frosting and a graham cracker. They then need to determine what total area of dry wall they can cover with each gallon of paint. Then they will use this to figure out a the area painted on 1 of 3 houses/blueprints and how much paint is needed to paint 3 rooms.

To learn about ratios and percent differences, have been calculating grocery costs. To support their learning, students listen to NPRs Planet Money podcast "Whys is Milk in the Back of the Store?". While listening students complete a 9 question worksheet which focuses on the numbers or statistics expressed in the episode, to keep students accountable to paying attention to the podcast. Link to the episode is on the worksheet.

Using MREs and either temperature probes or thermometers students will measure the temperature change of the water in the flameless heater. They will then calculate how much energy is transferred to the food. I usually have an army or national guard recruiter come in, bring MRE's, and conduct the lab, where students use this lab sheet to guide them.

This activity corresponds with Illustrative math algebra 1 unit 2 lesson 11 & 12 over linear graphs. I do this in 3 rounds. (1) Students need to correctly match the graph and the description (note 2 graphs are identical// others are similar). (2) then with their matched graph and description they need to find the proper linear equation. (3) students need to find the x & y intercepts. Please note games are plotted on the vertical axes and rides are plotted on the x.

Driving Questions: (1)What is the perfect s’mores recipe? (2)How many Gram crackers? (3)How much chocolate? (4) How many marshmallows? Introduction: A balanced chemical equation is analogous to a recipe for chocolate chip cookies. It shows what reactants (the ingredients) combine to form what products (the cookies). It also shows the numerical relationships between the reactants and products (such as how many cups of flour are required to make a single batch of cookies). These numerical relati

In leu of notes, have your students learn about energy through coloring. Students will learn about elastic potential energy, gravitational potential energy, kinetic energy, and work. They will sketch graphs, make pie charts, as well as LOL charts. I have students follow along with me as I color each component, talking off the cuff. I have students color code items with me. For example gravitational potential energy may be red so the line on the graph would be red and the person climbing the slid
