Experience

I graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. This is my 11th year in education. 7 years with Kindergarten, 3 years in First, & other general classroom settings.

Teaching style

I believe that each child is an exceptional individual who needs a secure, caring, and motivating environment in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. I believe there are three contributors that are conducive to creating this environment. The teacher must act as a guide at all times, through explicit and systematic instruction. The teacher must allow the child’s natural curiosity to direct his or her own learning and lastly, respect must always be promoted. I believe for students to construct knowledge, an educator must provide them with the opportunity to access hands-on activities, allowing adequate time and space to use materials. Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests. One way to take learning in a direction relevant to student interest is to invite student dialogue about the lessons and units of study. When students have ownership in the curriculum, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals. I want my students to create a strong sense of community where within that they have strong mutual respect. I want them to have respect for themselves, their classmates, and their teacher. I think this will promote affective and positive learning. For me, teaching provides an opportunity for constant learning and growth. I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children.
