This is a quick library lesson I have used with Emma Kate by Patricia Polacco. In the story, there is an imaginary friend and a real friend. The activity asks students to categorize images as real or imaginary. It could also be used along with an introduction to fiction and nonfiction, or with a discussion of real versus pretend.

Three activities, ranging from a simple ten minute quick comprehension check to a more detailed parody retelling, are part of my emergency sub plans in the library. This is a quick story follow-up for use as a center, in the library, or in substitute plans. It works on scissor skills, basic word recognition, and story retelling. Students cut out the bathtub and the king, then glue the king into the bathtub. Then, emergent writers can finish the sentence and suggest an activity to entice the king into leaving the tub. Simple, easy, print and go.

I created this phonics page for intermediate grade students who are still mastering first grade phonics skills.
