This lesson is designed to introduce the process of chunking (breaking a text down into smaller parts) for students. The students then have guided practice on a news article about the father/son racing team of Team Hoyt.
Students are given instructions on how to write a proper thesis using the funnel method. They are also given a model thesis. With this knowledge students will then look at examples and describe if they meet the qualifications of a good thesis.

Students are assigned to write journal entries as individuals living in the Industrial Revolution. This worksheet/project asks students to think about the role, audience, format, and topic while they write. This can be used a homework/closure or expanded for a full unit project.
Worksheet asks students to write a journal (from 3 prompts provided) for 6 minutes. Once students are done writing, a guided worksheet will lead them through the editing process. Students will look through their writing for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, quotation errors, as well as sentence structure, homophones, and meaning.
