Experience

Welcome to where creativity meets simplicity! I know you will enjoy my amazing art lessons, hand made for you and your young artists. Hi, I'm Andrea! I've been an art educator for 25+ years and an art curriculum developer for 18+ years. I am also a professional artist and a former homeschooling mom. Together with my mother Jantje, I created KinderArt.com in 1997. It's a website which has been visited more than 100 million times in the last ten years alone! That's translates into a lot of children taking part in KinderArt art lessons, which is thrilling, to say the least :) In 2018, we expanded to create The KinderArt Club, a full service art lesson membership community which has welcomed thousands of teachers, parents and art studio owners.

Teaching style

My passion lies in helping teachers and parents bring out the creativity in their children, even if they don’t consider themselves artists. My detailed child-tested lesson plans are easy to implement, and are guaranteed to promote creative exploration in small or large group settings. Most of all, the lessons are effective and they encourage individuality. If children have access to quality art education, they will thrive.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I worked as a writer (Teacher’s Guide), editor and writer (Parent’s Guide) and an educational consultant on the JumpStart Artist product produced by Knowledge Adventure. For the Teacher’s Guide specifically, my job - in addition to writing lesson plans - was to make sure that all activities fit within the US National Standards for Arts Education. As a writer, I’ve written about art, creativity and homeschooling for a variety of publications. I wrote "What Can I Draw Today? Daily Drawing Prompts for Young Artists" and co-wrote the books "Awesome Architecture for Kids" and "Born to Create". I’ve covered K-6 Education and Art History for About.com, art education for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, art appreciation for the book Girl Wise and cursive writing and homeschooling for CBC and raising creative children for Today’s Parent magazine. I also write a blog ("The Art of Childhood") about art for kids at YMC and am currently writing a book full of activities for children.

My own education history

I received my Fine Arts Diploma from the Georgian College School of Design and Visual Arts and did my BFA coursework at Thompson Rivers University.

Additional biographical information

Over the past 25+ years, I've taught art in public and private schools, led classes in my own art studio, been part of artist in the school events, developed curriculum for a gallery/museum outreach program, presented "how to teach art" professional development workshops to teachers, worked as a consultant and writer on art curricula, and spearheaded a program ensuring every child in my community receives free art instruction. I also homeschooled my daughter for 10 years. Joining The KinderArt Club gives you access to me, my art lessons and a community of like-minded teachers and parents.
