Modeling the Rock Cycle Using Starbursts

The Rock Cycle: Modeling the Rock Cycle using Starbursts! In this activity, students model the rock cycle using pieces of starburst candy. Students will complete the following to their starburst to model all parts of the rock cycle: 1. Sedimentary Rocks: students cut up the starbursts into small pieces and press them back together. 2. Metamorphic Rocks: students apply heat and pressure to the starbursts by squeezing the starburst in their hand. 3. Igneous Rocks: students melt the starbursts a

Properties of Minerals Bundle

Teach minerals and properties of minerals with style! In this activity, students use candy to practice their understanding of mineral properties. The following mineral properties are taught: hardness, cleavage and fracture, color, luster, and streak. Students are given five different types of candy and create a Moh's hardness scale of the candies provided along with making observations about the other "mineral properties" of their candy. By purchasing this bundle you will receive the following

Modeling Molecules Bundle

Students create edible models of molecules using marshmallows and uncooked spaghetti noodles. It is a great activity to learn about atoms, molecules, interpreting chemical compounds, and reading the periodic table. This bundle includes a guided note page, a google slides presentation, an activity worksheet, and an answer key. The answer key is part of the google slides presentation so students can grade themselves or their peers at the end of the activity. The note page discusses the basics on

Racing Sugar Cubes Lab- Exploring Variables That Effect Dissolving Rates.

This lab provides students the opportunity to explore the factors that influence how quickly a solid (sugar) dissolves in water. Students brainstorm three physical methods to dissolve a sugar cube faster than the control (placing a sugar cube in water), and predict which will be most effective. I love this lab because students are the ones problem solving to find a solution to get their sugar cube to dissolve at a faster rate. It is a problem based learning lab and incorporates the scientific

Gummy Bear Terror! Physical Changes and Chemical Changes Lab with Answer Key

This activity a wonderful way to teach or review physical changes and chemical changes. Students complete 8 different stations in which they "terrorize" poor helpless gummy bears. At each station, students must determine whether the gummy bear is being terrorized by a physical change or chemical change. The first station I use is adding a gummy bear to melted potassium chlorate. This station should be done as a demonstration. The rest of the stations students can be completed in lab groups.

About the store

Experience

I have a degree in Chemistry/Physics education and 14 years of teaching experience. I have taught 7th and 8th grade science, tutored students from ages 8-18 in math and science, and have taught Preschool.

Teaching style

I enjoy making science as fun and engaging for my students as possible. I often have my students working in groups and collaborating. I feel students learn best when I can get them doing something versus listening to lectures. When we can get children engaged in the scientific process, it will teach them vital skills needed in adulthood like critical thinking and asking meaningful questions. I also love implementing technology into the classroom. I have developed activities using ipads, promethean boards, flip cameras, and other forms of technology. Lastly, I enjoy having the kids create. Whether it is a poster, model, or video. I love getting my kids to the stage where they can take the information given to them and create something. It shows such a higher understanding of the material and you get to see their creative sides.
